ABOUT TONS OF ROCK
Tons of Rock is Norway’s largest rock and metal festival, known for bringing music lovers from all over the world together for a celebration of powerful music and an unforgettable festival atmosphere. Since its inception in 2014, the festival has developed into a cultural highlight and an important part of Norway’s music history. In 2024, 150,000 rock fans visited Ekebergsletta in Oslo, marking a record year for this grand celebration of rock and metal.
From Halden to Oslo
Tons of Rock started at Fredriksten Fortress in Halden in 2014, where it offered a unique combination of spectacular surroundings and world-class music. After five years of success, the festival moved to Ekebergsletta in Oslo in 2019 to meet increasing demand and accommodate more visitors.
Star-Studded Lineup
Over the years, Tons of Rock has delivered some of the most impressive lineups in rock and metal. The festival has hosted legends such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Guns N' Roses, and KISS, as well as modern giants like Ghost, Pantera, Bring Me the Horizon, and Greta Van Fleet. Norwegian heroes like Kvelertak, Mayhem, and Dimmu Borgir have also been an important part of the program.
With over 50 bands spread across multiple stages each year, Tons of Rock covers a wide range of genres – from classic rock favorites to the heaviest metal tunes. The festival also provides a platform for emerging stars and unique musical projects, making the experience both varied and exciting.
Behind the Scenes
Tons of Rock is more than a festival – it’s a massive logistical operation involving over 3,000 staff and volunteers. Planning takes place throughout the year, and every detail is perfected to give the audience a seamless and memorable experience. The festival also contributes significantly to Oslo’s economy and strengthens Norway’s position as a destination for international music experiences.

Additionally, the festival is committed to safety and inclusion through its #SafeFestival campaign, actively working to create a secure and positive environment for all attendees. The campaign focuses on combating harassment and unwanted behavior with measures such as visible security, safe zones, and clear communication.
Tons of Rock also takes environmental responsibility seriously, implementing sustainable initiatives like recycling, plastic reduction, and collaborations with local initiatives to minimize the festival’s footprint.
